Congratulations to the Sparta Boy’s Cross Country Team and Individual Taylor Winterton on qualifying for the WIAA State Cross Country Meet.

What a great day of racing for the Boy’s Cross Country team. The Spartans came into today’s Sectional needing to finish in the top two to qualify for State. Lead by a great group of seniors they secured 2nd place and will advance to State next Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids. The Spartans finished a close 2nd with 82 points to Champion Viroqua with 77. They out ran conference champions Mauston and Altoona to finish a strong 2nd in the 15 team field. Leading the Spartans was Max Engh with a time of 17:40 to finish 6th overall. Max was just one second off his best time of the year. Finishing 2nd for the Spartans was Caleb Pokorny running his best time of the year in 18:02 to finish 13th. Close behind were Izak Anderson 18:14 for 19th place, Kole Nelson 18:15 (his career best) for 20th place, Sam Forbes 18:21 (his season best) for 24th place, Ethan Anderson 18:47 for 38th place and Chad Merow 18:53 (his career best) for 41st place.
Viroqua won the meet with 77 pts., Sparta was 2nd with 82, and Altoona was 3rd with 115 pts.

In the girl’s race the Spartans finished 5th overall in the 15 team field. Taylor Winterton ran her way to the State Tournament with an impressive 3rd place finish overall in a time of 19:47. A strong pack of Sparta girls followed close behind led by Aly Laufenberg 22:30 30th overall, Angie Talsky 22:47 31st, Tori Hanson 23:08 36th, Kari O’Rourke 23:10 39th, Lydia Hone 25:59 67th and Julianna Pokorny 26:15 72nd. The girl’s race was won by Wisconsin Dells with 56 pts. followed by Westby with 61. Sparta was 5th with 128 pts.

The boy’s team will race next Saturday at 12:35 PM; Taylor will run at 2:25 PM. The State Meet is held in Wisconsin Rapids at the Ridges GC.
